Director Katri Ilona Koppanen returns to work with BEAST IN BLACK on the music video for ‘Lost Children.’ The newly revealed power ballad features lead vocalist Yannis Papadopoulos and comes from the band’s forthcoming fourth studio album, Fear The Beast.
The song continues the band’s creative connection with the manga Berserk. For guitarist and vocalist Anton Kabanen, its starting point was the ‘Lost Children Chapter,’ which he first read some 20 years ago.
‘I wanted to find my own way to tell this important, tragic and heart-wrenching story, while staying true to its delicate child-like purity and meaningful core,’ Kabanen explains.
His account focuses on Rosine, a child who becomes an antagonist and commits terrible acts while also remaining a victim of her circumstances. Kabanen describes the God Hand’s offer of escape from suffering as central to that contradiction: understanding her decisions does not mean forgiving her actions.
‘You experience anger, horror, sadness and compassion, sometimes almost simultaneously,’ he says. ‘By the end, there’s a sense of emotional absolution, because you realise that the character you’ve been fighting against is also a victim herself. It’s not a straightforward story of good versus evil. The emotions are contradictory, and that’s precisely why it’s so deeply moving.’
Kabanen also credits Koppanen’s visual and emotional storytelling with connecting the video to themes of fragility, childhood and hope. He closes his statement with the image of home: ‘And we all are drawn to that warm light glowing softly in the window called home.’
The announcement lists BEAST IN BLACK as Papadopoulos on lead vocals, Mate Molnar on bass, Atte Palokangas on drums, Markus Venehsalo on guitars, and Kabanen on guitars, vocals and virtual instruments programming. The supplied photo credit is Jarmo Katila / Toni Kilpinen.
