The official video for PATRIARCHS IN BLACK’s ‘No More Blood’ is available on Metalville’s YouTube channel. The first single from To Serve Man, due January 8, 2027 via Metalville, features vocals from Dan Lorenzo, Jeff Dixon, Sarah Sovak and Joe Ferrara, with Johnny Kelly on drums and Lorenzo on guitars and bass.
Lorenzo’s account of the song begins with its bassline. The chorus followed, with its words and melody arriving together: ‘When I wrote “No More Blood,” I came up with the bassline first. Soon after, I “heard” the chorus in my head – lyrics, melody, and everything.’
Reading a book on Patton led Lorenzo to picture D-Day through the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan. He had also seen parts of Platoon while channel-surfing a few weeks earlier. ‘I can’t imagine how horrible war must be – terrible,’ he explains.
The recording began with Lorenzo singing scratch vocals before Kelly recorded his drums. A small portion of Lorenzo’s chorus vocals remains on the track alongside the other singers. As he puts it: ‘I left in a small portion of my chorus vocals, but then had Jeff Dixon, Sarah Sovak, and Joe Ferrara REALLY sing.’
Kelly, formerly of Type O Negative and Danzig, and guitarist and riff writer Lorenzo, of Hades and Non-Fiction, formed PATRIARCHS IN BLACK at the end of 2021. The doom metal band’s new album continues their use of guest musicians across its individual tracks.
Alongside the vocal guests, To Serve Man includes flute and keys from Sovak and violin from Jonathan Eng on ‘No Hue.’ Damon Trotta, Dave Neabore, Johnny Araya and Eric J. Morgan supply bass on separate tracks. Kelly plays drums throughout, while Lorenzo handles guitars across all 12 songs and bass on eight.
