Bassist and lyricist Rick White discusses personal trauma and addiction in WITHIN THE REALM’s announcement for ‘Spiral of Terror,’ the second single from their forthcoming debut album, ‘…Of Systemic Decay.’ Due October 30, the album follows the Newfoundland thrash band’s first single, ‘Into the Night.’ The new announcement includes a YouTube stream of ‘Spiral of Terror.’
The song follows a young person confronting trauma, addiction and fear while trying to escape their past. In the press release, that narrative is contrasted with ‘Into the Night,’ which addresses heavy metal’s enduring spirit and sense of community. The announcement describes the newer song as combining old-school thrash aggression with hooks and dynamic songwriting.
“'Spiral of Terror' is one of the heavier and more emotionally charged songs on the album. It's about facing personal demons and the terrifying downward spiral that can happen when trauma and addiction take hold. We wanted the song to feel intense and overwhelming while still delivering the energy and power that metal fans expect,” White says.
For the album’s recording, WITHIN THE REALM sought an unpolished sound built around the musicians’ performances. Guitarist and vocalist Geoff Waye explains: “We wanted a fast, thrash-driven record with an honest, unpolished sound. No click tracks, no autotune, just real performances and real metal.”
‘…Of Systemic Decay’ revisits material written between 2017 and 2019. Its stated lyrical subjects include paranormal phenomena, UFO conspiracies, government deception and societal manipulation, alongside personal struggles, resilience and the community surrounding heavy metal. WITHIN THE REALM cite Slayer, Megadeth, Sacred Reich, Sacrifice and Sepultura among their influences, while drawing on other branches of metal.
White and Waye first performed together in the St. John’s metal band Oberon in the mid-1990s. The announcement also lists Category VI, Triskelyon, Artach, Festered Corpse, Sacrament A.D., Rapid Burial, Corporal Punishment, Last Soul Down, Jaded Truth and Winterhearth among the members’ collective musical backgrounds. It does not assign those individual affiliations to particular members.
Drummer Mike Ryan describes finishing the recordings as the culmination of a lengthy process: “We've all grown as musicians and as friends while making this record. It feels great to finally have these songs recorded after nearly ten years. I'm incredibly proud of the production, and I hope fans connect with it as much as we do.”
The eight-track album opens with ‘Sixth Sense’ (4:13), followed by ‘Endless Life’ (4:59), ‘Spiral of Terror’ (5:39) and ‘Hidden Agenda’ (5:05). The remaining sequence is ‘Homicidal Sacrifice’ (4:12), ‘The Hydra’ (5:26), ‘The Information is Out’ (5:16) and ‘Into The Night’ (4:24).
