IOTUNN’s "Kinship" is a massive album arising from the primeval sea. It’s a mythological journey through eight tracks that span immense spheres both musically and lyrically, exploring the deep roots of human nature, its connection and disconnection with everything and everyone, and how our choices have always defined ourselves and the lives lived.
Kinship Elegiac #1:
"My brother and I have been writing the guitar soundscapes for the Kinship album for more than four years and would like to present some of the parts from the album. The opening song, Kinship Elegiac, was written during a period of 4+ years and is one of the most crazy, creative rides we´ve been on as composers " - Jesper Gräs
Kinship Elegiac #2:
"This riff is very dear to me and shows a highlight on the album where the whole band takes of higher and higher into the soundscapes, and with Jón unfolding his vocals on the most amazing scale. The dynamics of this whole outro is soaring and ends at the highest peak" - Jens Nicolai
Mistland:
"Mistland means very much to me personally and to the band. It has a very special vibe to it as it feels like it has somehow managed to flow out from the point where light and dark meet. It is dark in its deepest feelings and yet uplifting and this aspect to our soundscape is something we are always striving to find, and I think we found it perfectly with Mistland" - Jesper Gräs
Twilight:
"We chose this part as one of the parts we wished to present in this series of videos where we present parts from the Kinship album songs because we just love it! This part shows some essential IOTUNN riffing philosophy. It is evolving, it is a duet and it has several energies to it all at once. It is fury metal and it is symphonic, atmospheric and uplifting at the same time. And the shift from the guitar solo to this verse is one of my favorite transitions on the album” - Jesper Gräs
I Feel the Night
"This part shows a duet finger piece written by Jesper. I remember being present when he wrote this, and the relief was big for him. This piece is something Jesper wanted to write - a very dreamy finger piece with lots of atmosphere which reached out to the great rock and metal bands of the 70´s and 80´s with a clear touch of our Nordic origin" - Jens Nicolai Gräs
“The mid-sections from Earth To Sky is some of my favorite music from the Kinship album. I wrote the foundational finger piece, and I remember that I showed it to Jens Nicolai in our home studio one day. I had to go for 15 minutes or so and said to him that it would be cool to have leads on all the mid-sections before I returned. When I did, he had written everything and not a single note was changed for the album” - Jesper tells
The Anguished Ethereal
“The Anguished Ethereal is a work from my hand. A song that we really love in the band and one that we just played live for the first time back in January. The song really put us in a kind of trance when playing it and we feel very connected with it. This piece shows the main riff which is something I am very proud of, and it is actually one of Jón´s favorite riffs of the album” - Jens Nicolai
