A pine-branch hut built by CAVERNOUS MAW makes a brief appearance in their new video for “The Yeti Approaches the Wall.” Vocalist and guitarist Niilo Smith and drummer Ben Fagerness constructed the rudimentary “Viking hut” on location for the shoot. Premiered through Decibel Magazine, the video accompanies the opening track of Ancestral Lands Beyond the Antarctic Ice Wall, released October 27, 2026.
The song begins the Minneapolis death metal duo’s concept narrative, following a yeti beyond the boundaries of his familiar world. Across the EP, discovery, curiosity, growth and understanding lead ultimately to humanity’s downfall. The journey also serves as a metaphor for self-discovery, the pursuit of knowledge and pushing beyond personal limitations.
Fagerness explains how the opening song took shape: “The Yeti Approaches the Wall was the first song we wrote for our next EP. It started as nearly all of our songs do, the two of us jamming in the practice space, locking onto a riff and expanding it. The arrangement and drum parts were carefully crafted to keep the energy flowing from beginning to end. Lyrically, the song is about exactly what the title suggests: a yeti approaching a wall. Whether that wall is physical or mental is up to the listener.”
That rehearsal-room collaboration extends throughout CAVERNOUS MAW’s writing process. Smith and Fagerness develop every song together, shaping riffs and refining arrangements in the same space. They recorded Ancestral Lands Beyond the Antarctic Ice Wall largely live in their practice room before adding vocals.
The approach builds on their debut EP, Primitive, which developed organically and was not initially intended to include vocals. The new EP, by contrast, was conceived from the outset as a death metal record, with a more deliberate approach to song structures and arrangements. Its musical vocabulary combines death metal with melody and influences from black metal, technical death metal and classic extreme metal.
Longtime friends Smith and Fagerness played together in various projects before forming CAVERNOUS MAW. They chose a two-member lineup for its simplicity and creative freedom. Beyond the new EP’s fantasy narrative, their lyrical interests include humanity, history, ancestral living, exploration and nature, with curiosity and self-reliance recurring in the band’s outlook.
The announcement points listeners toward Nile, Behemoth, Cannibal Corpse, Death and Borknagar as reference points. It also reports that the duo already have material written for future releases and are building a dedicated recording studio. Describing the EP as “a more mature expansion of our original vision,” the band say listeners can expect more music.
