RADIANT KNIFE – explore consciousness in ‘Disciple Of The Astral Plane’ video

Human consciousness and its connections to the wider universe provide the subject of RADIANT KNIFE’s new video, ‘Disciple Of The Astral Plane.’ Premiered by Everything Is Noise, the song comes from the Louisiana experimental doom metal duo’s sixth full-length, Sankalpa, set for independent release on November 13th.

The band explains: “‘Disciple Of The Astral Plane’ explores the roots of human consciousness, and our connection to each other and the not so apparent universe. Driving transcendental riffs, floating vocals and subtle synth overlays eventually culminate into anthemic dueling guitars guiding you off the edge of the astral plane.”

In its premiere coverage, Everything Is Noise described the track as “some of the most ethereal stuff I’ve heard from RADIANT KNIFE so far,” highlighting its melodies, leads and closing solo. The outlet wrote: “Comfortably breaking the five-minute mark, it constructs serene melodies, bold leads, and uses awesome vocals to speak to the soul.”

RADIANT KNIFE consists of Stephen Sheppert on guitars, synth and vocals, and Greg Travasos on drums. Their science fiction influences sit within a background in southern Louisiana’s experimental metal lineage, which the announcement traces back nearly four decades. Alongside the region’s sludge tradition associated with Eyehategod, Crowbar and Acid Bath, the duo draws on the experimental music released by Relapse, Hydrahead and Amphetamine Reptile Records during the mid-1990s.

Sankalpa follows 2023’s Pressure. The new record retains elements of its predecessor’s gritty sound and off-time rhythms while placing greater emphasis on groove, melody, layering and texture. Its arrangements combine overlapping lead guitars, atmospheric synths, floating vocals and dense rhythm guitars. The announcement places that sound alongside Hum, Elder and Russian Circles, with Dazzling Killmen, King Crimson and 1990s experimental metal remaining key influences.

The album title is defined in the announcement as a heartfelt, focused intention or solemn vow. Its predecessor drew descriptions including “a genuinely diverse and engaging piece of work” from The Sleeping Shaman, “a face-clawing riff ‘n’ rhythm record” from Mystification Zine, and “synthy, doomy, and experimental” from Metal Injection.

Sheppert recorded, mixed and mastered Sankalpa at Starless Sound. Terry Grow created the artwork. The album will be released digitally across all streaming platforms, with preorders available through the RADIANT KNIFE Bandcamp page, where the title track is also streaming.
