ABSTRACTED have released a music video for “Sirens,” from their current album Hiraeth, featuring the Brazilian progressive metal group performing inside the ruins of Casa da Frontaria Azulejada in Santos, on the coast of São Paulo. The band chose the historic location to accompany a song about grief and loss.
In the announcement supplied by Secret Service Publicity, ABSTRACTED explain that drummer Fernando Pollon wrote the lyrics following his brother’s death in a highway accident some years ago. “The song explores the universal feeling of grief and the process of loss, allowing each listener to find their own meaning in it,” the band say.
The filming location brought practical concerns alongside its connection to the subject. “To visually match this somber theme, the music video was filmed inside the ruins of the historic 'Casa da Frontaria Azulejada' in Santos (coastal region of São Paulo),” ABSTRACTED explain. “Because the interior is heavily degraded, we had to perform with extreme care, as loud frequencies could literally cause parts of the structure to collapse. This fragile and intense atmosphere perfectly translates the weight of the song onto the screen.”
The announcement describes “Sirens” as combining technical playing with melodic and atmospheric passages. Its place on Hiraeth reflects the album’s broader movement between melodic progressive metal, more aggressive material and cinematic elements. ABSTRACTED cite Opeth, Vildhjarta and Between the Buried and Me among their influences, with jazz-fusion passages also forming part of their musical approach.
Hiraeth was produced by Diego Castro, whose credits include Kryour and Skid Life, with cover artwork by Roberto Emerita. The album is available on digital streaming and download platforms and as a jewelcase CD. The supplied Bandcamp destination offers ordering information, with the announcement stating that orders ship from the United States, Europe or Brazil according to the buyer’s location.
Before the album’s release, ABSTRACTED issued the digital singles and videos “Languish” and “Axis.” “Languish” includes a guest contribution from ENTHEOS vocalist Chaney Crabb. The new “Sirens” video follows those earlier releases, while the band also recently supported Between the Buried and Me in Brazil.
The four years since the preceding release, Atma Conflux, brought three additions to the lineup. Guitarists Leonardo Brito and José Consani and drummer Fernando Pollon joined the core trio of vocalist Rosano Pedro Matiussi, bassist Riverton Vilela Alves and keyboardist Carol Lynn. The announcement describes Hiraeth as drawing on the group’s 11 years of experience and the influences brought together by that six-member lineup.
